How we review and rate films & series
What our ratings mean, what we judge, and the rules every MovieMania review follows — so you know exactly how to read our verdicts.
- Last updated: 28 October 2026
- 5-star rating scale
01The ground rules
- We watch the full film — or, for series, the episodes stated in the review — before rating it.
- Ratings are never sold, traded or changed on request from studios, actors or PR teams.
- Reviews are spoiler-free by default; spoilers are only in clearly labelled sections.
- We say where and how we watched (theatre, OTT platform, or press screening).
02What our ratings mean
Must-watch. Exceptional on almost every level; worth seeing in a theatre.
Highly recommended. Strong film with only small flaws.
Worth a watch. Enjoyable for fans of the genre or cast, but uneven.
Skip or wait for OTT. A few good moments, but major problems.
Avoid. Fails at what it set out to do.
Half-stars (e.g. 3.5) are used when a title sits between two levels.

Performances

04What every review includes
- Key details: cast, director, runtime, certification, release date and where to watch
- A spoiler-free story setup
- What works and what doesn't
- A clear final verdict and star rating
- Author name and publish/update date
05Press screenings & disagreements
If we watch a title at a free press screening or through a screener link, we say so in the review. This never affects the rating.
