DC Settles Whether Tim Drake or Damian Wayne Is the ‘True’ Robin
Spoilers ahead for Batman Catwoman: The Gotham War – Scorched Earth 1!Fans can finally end the debate of which Robin should stay and which one should pack it in. As “Gotham War” hits its dramatic conclusion, the subject of multiple Boys Wonder comes up. But rather than any more back and forth, DC Comics gives its final say on its Robin problem. In Batman Catwoman: The Gotham War – Scorched Earth 1 by Chip Zdarsky, Tini Howard, Mike Hawthorne, and Nikola Čižmešija, Batman’s villains have just scored upgrades from the Batcave thanks to Vandal Savage. Unfortunately, Tim Drake crosses their path and is taken hostage after they overwhelm him. The villains continue their assault on the city as Ventriloquist and Scarface (dressed as Batman and Robin) torment Robin. The dummy tells the real Boy Wonder that there’s no room for two Robins. But Tim rebuffs him just as the Bat-Family arrives saying there’s always a place for more than one Robin.
Tim Drake Confirms There’s No Limit When it Comes to Robins
Nearly since Batman began, there’s almost always been a Robin by Batman’s side. Tim Drake was one of the longest-serving Boys Wonder, but the arrival of Damian Wayne saw Tim booted from his position to make room for Robin’s son. Tim went by a few other identities such as Red Robin and Drake, but eventually he settled back into the role of Robin. However, despite the drama Damian had with his father, he retained his moniker, giving the Bat-Family two Robins. It was a change to the norm and fans have since debated on which Robin deserves the title and who should move on to a new heroic identity. Batman’s current Robins have butted heads over the years (Damian even tried killing Tim when the two first met). And while they’ve got a small rivalry going on, Tim makes it perfectly clear: He’s more than willing to share the Robin mantle with Damian. After all, there’s nothing that officially says there can only be one Robin at a time. Plus it’s not uncommon for heroes to share superhero identities. Clark Kent and his son are both Superman right now, and even in the Bat-Family, the Batgirl moniker is currently being shared by Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain. It’s a new era and there’s plenty of space for Damian and Tim to stay on as Robin.
The Bat-Family Flourishes with Multiple Robins
As coveted as the Robin title is, both Damian and Tim have done more than enough to prove they each deserve the mantle. In the past, there may have only been room for one person to have a specific identity at a time, but times change. Having multiple Robins only aids Bat-Family, especially since Tim and Damian have radically different gifts they bring to the table. Rather than have the two young heroes compete for who deserves to be the ‘main’ Robin, DC Comics seems content to allow space for both Tim Drake and Damian Wayne to keep the title they’ve earned.
