First Look: Official Images from Alec Baldwin's 'Rust' Spotlight Late Cinematographer's Talent
Rust’s images are the first official public look at the work of the late cinematographer Halina Hutchins. In October 2021, a tragedy occurred on the set of a Western movie in New Mexico when a prop gun operated by actor Alec Baldwin accidentally fired live ammunition, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. There was some debate over whether Rust should be released in the first place, but this is probably the best way to honor the late cinematographer. The plot was an afterthought given the tragedy that occurred on set, but the film stars Baldwin as the titular Harland Lust. Harland Lust is an aging outlaw who comes out of retirement to care for his 13-year-old grandson Lucas Hollister (played by Patrick Scott McDermott). he was sentenced to death for manslaughter. On the run from the law, the pair are pursued by the vicious bounty hunter Fenton “Preacher” Lang (played by Vikings star Travis Fimmel). Rust is set in 1880s Kansas and based on the first look-images, it’s sure to showcase some iconic Western imagery, such as sweeping desert landscapes and lone rangers on horseback. The images, lensed by Hutchins and Cline, capture the rugged beauty of Western terrain.
Hutchins’ widower, Matthew Hutchins, is credited on Rust as executive producer, a designation that was granted after settling a wrongful death lawsuit with Baldwin and other producers. In the wake of the shooting, at least six people, including members of the production team, have also filed negligence lawsuits against Rust’s producers.
