The MCU Still Hasn’t Resolved A Phase 3 Villain Mystery
The MCU still has a villain mystery that continues from stage 3 of Ant-Man and the Wasp. Set in the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War, Scott Lang’s Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) has to deal with the ramifications of his decision to help Steve Rogers. This act puts him under house arrest and accidentally causes Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) to run away. However, the film also portrayed a new MCU villain that is still unrevealed five years later.Seeking to rescue Hope’s mother Janet from the Quantum Realm and facing the new villain known as Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) all while avoiding arrest by the FBI, Ant-Man and his allies had a lot to deal with in 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp. As such, the movie’s tease of a new villain in the MCU with vast resources was ultimately never revealed. However, future MCU projects may finally provide the answer.
Ant-Man And The Wasp’s Mysterious Tech Buyer Is Never Revealed
Hank and Hope needed all sorts of proprietary hardware to build a quantum tunnel to enter the subatomic universe and rescue Janet. They strike a deal with Sonny Burch (Walton Goggins), a black market tech dealer and restaurant owner. Birch provided them with the equipment and resources they needed, and eventually attempted to blackmail the Pyms into continuing their cooperation, believing that quantum technology could be “the next great gold rush”. On behalf of the buyer who offered $1 billion for Hank and Hope’s work, the identity of the buyer was not disclosed after Hope turned it down. Resources like this show that the resource Sonny represents is very strong. With those kinds of resources, it follows that whoever Sonny was representing is very powerful. However, Sonny and his men were all arrested in the final act of Ant-Man and the Wasp with the identity of the buyer unrevealed by the movie’s end. As a result, the name has remained a mystery for the last five years with the MCU now in the middle of Phase 5 and a brand new Multiverse Saga.
Armor Wars Can Finally Answer Ant-Man 2’s Villain Mystery
Maybe a future MCU project like Armor Wars will finally reveal the true identity of this mysterious Phase 3 villain. Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes will play Don Cheadle’s return as War Machine, as seen in Avengers: Endgame, as Iron Man’s technology finds its way into the wrong hands after his death. I plan to star in it. Additionally, Goggins has been confirmed to reprise his role as Sonny Burch, which is a pretty good sign that his employer may finally be revealed in the next installment. Sony Birch’s buyers were aggressively pursuing advanced technology and could theoretically afford to spend $1 billion on quantum technology developed by the Pym family. Sonny Burch’s buyer was actively pursuing advanced tech and could theoretically afford to spend a billion dollars on quantum technology built by the Pyms. It would make sense that they might be in the market for Stark tech as well. As a result, Armor Wars seems to be perfectly primed to reveal who this mysterious buyer is in the MCU.
Who Could Sonny Burch’s Employer Be?
Based upon the comics’ Armor Wars, Iron Man 2’s Justin Hammer is prime a candidate as the buyer as he’d undoubtedly be eager for Stark tech following the death of his longtime rival. However, it could be a remnant of Hydra as Sonny referred to SHIELD’s collapse in Ant-Man and the Wasp. Sharon Carter’s Power Broker is also possible given her villain twist in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. A popular theory is that MCU’s Norman Osborn is the buyer, not to be confused with the Green Goblin who came from another universe in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Regardless, here’s hoping the MCU’s Phase 3 mystery will be resolved soon.
