The Last Kingdom has become one of Netflix’s most popular series since it was acquired by the BBC in 2018. Based on the adventures of the protagonist Uhtred von Bebbanburg, The Last Kingdom depicts the emergence of England as a single united kingdom in a fictional but perfectly plausible reenactment. The series aptly concludes with the historic Battle of Bulnamburgh, widely regarded as a pivotal moment in the unification of England by King Æthelstan. The ending of The Last Kingdom: The Seven Kings Must Die captures this pivotal moment in the story, but the journey leading up to it reveals a lot about The Last Kingdom’s characters and storyline. remains an unresolved question. The decision to end the series with a movie instead of season 6 caused the film to go through a number of significant events, resulting in some disastrous omissions.
Where Is Stiorra After The Last Kingdom?
Uhtred and Gisela’s daughter Stiorra becomes an important character during The Last Kingdom season 4. Stiorra, who is fiery and willful, much like her father, is oddly omitted from The Last Kingdom‘s movie, Seven Kings Must Die. She is alive at the end of The Last Kingdom season 5, but she is not so much as mentioned in the movie. Stiorra is a strong character whose arc warranted some sort of closure before the conclusion of the series, even if it was a simple mention of her living in some distant country.
What Happened To The Last Kingdom’s Hild?
Hild is another great character from The Last Kingdom who is not featured in Seven Kings Must Die. Hild is a warrior-nun and a dear friend of Uhtred’s, making her absence more surprising. The last time she appears in The Last Kingdom is when she escorts Uhtred’s estranged son, Osbert, to Bebbanburg to be with his father. Hild becomes a fan-favorite character over the course of the show, which makes it a shame that she doesn’t get a proper send-off. Similar to Stiorra, it would have helped if she had at least been mentioned in Seven Kings Must Die, but, sadly, she is forgotten entirely.
Where Is Sihtric’s Family?
Sihtric is one of Uhtred’s closest friends and allies, accompanying him on countless dangerous missions over the course of The Last Kingdom‘s story. In the main series, Sihtric is often shown with his wife and their many children. However, Seven Kings Must Die does not show or mention his family at any point. This is especially strange in the early parts of The Last Kingdom film, such as when Sihtric and the rest of Uhtred’s men are living peacefully at home. One would think Sihtric’s family would be living there with him, but they are mysteriously absent from the movie.
How Did Uhtred And Osbert Reconcile?
Seven Kings Must Die shows Uhtred’s youngest child, Osbert, grown up and living happily with his father. However, Osbert did not know Uhtred until he was brought to Bebbanburg by Hild in The Last Kingdom season 5, at which point he was already in his teens. It seems like Osbert would hold some feelings of resentment toward Uhtred for abandoning him for all those years. Yet, by the time of Seven Kings Must Die, Uhtred and Osbert appear to have a typical father-son relationship. It seems unlikely that Osbert showed up and loved his estranged father dearly right from the start, so there must have been some sort of reconciliation between them. This would have been a huge moment in the story, especially considering that Osbert is Uhtred’s heir, but The Last Kingdom movie lacks any sort of explanation.
What Did The Last Kingdom Do To Eadith?
Eadith is another great Last Kingdom character who is omitted from the movie. Eadith becomes a close ally of Uhtred’s by the end of the series, but her character disappears entirely after season 5. In the books, Uhtred ends up marrying Eadith, so she was expected to turn up at some point in Seven Kings Must Die. Instead, the movie opted not to give Uhtred a final romantic endeavor, which resulted in Eadith being cut out altogether. Eadith’s importance to the story justified some closure on her character, even if she did not end up with Uhtred.
Who Did Edward Want To Succeed Him?
The main catalyst for the events in Seven Kings Must Die is the death of King Edward and the conflict over his succession. Aethelstan ends up killing his half-brother, Aelfweard, in order to claim the throne, but it is never mentioned who Edward preferred as his successor. Had he named an official aethling, it could have prevented a lot of bloodshed. Moreover, Edward’s internal conflict surrounding his sons and their mothers is an important part of his character, and it is left unresolved by Edward’s failure to name an heir.
Is Uhtred Dead After The Last Kingdom’s Movie?
Perhaps the most burning question at the end of the series is: What is Uhtred’s fate in Seven Kings Must Die? Uhtred ends the film grievously injured, standing between Earth and Valhalla. He seems to be deciding between living and dying, but it is never clarified which he chooses. To further obscure the matter, the film ends with a narration by Finnan stating that it is unclear whether Uhtred was alive or dead. With such an ambiguous ending, the series leaves viewers to decide for themselves whether Uhtred will survive the scars he received in The Last Kingdom.
What Happened To Aelfwynn?
Aelhuwin is the daughter of Ethelblaid and the Viking warrior Erik. Curiously, she is largely forgotten in The Last Kingdom after the death of her mother. After Æthelblade’s death, Edward would eventually succeed Mercia, possibly marrying Aelphwyn or sending her to a convent. But given Uhtred’s love for Ethelblade, it looks like she did her best to protect her daughter from Edward. Instead of addressing this conflict, The Last Kingdom simply deletes the character, leaving her fate unresolved.
What About The Kings Whose Sons Died At Brunanburh?
Interesting in the aftermath of the Battle of Brunumbul is the fate of the kings who fought against Æthelstan. Each of them loses a son in battle, who turns out to be the “King” mentioned in the prophecy of “The Seven Kings shall die”, but the actual fate of the kings is never resolved. After the battle, they fight Anlaf together, but this is the last time they show up. For all the bloodshed they caused, Ethelstan must have had some consequences for them, but they are never explored in The Last Kingdom.
How Old Is Uhtred At The End Of The Last Kingdom’s Timeline?
The age of Uhtred in The Last Kingdom has always been a big talking point in the series. Uhtred does not age nearly as much as his book counterpart, who is an old man by the end of the books. The historical events that the show is based on take place over several decades, yet, strangely, Uhtred hardly seems to age at all. The Last Kingdom seems to accelerate the pace of historical events to streamline the plot, but that makes it nearly impossible to state exactly how old Uhtred is supposed to be at the end of the series.
